Affordable Learning Georgia promotes student success and fosters educational equity through its programs to boost the use of affordable and open educational resources.

If you wish to apply for an Affordable Learning Georgia grant on behalf of Dalton State College, you must submit the Notice of Intent to Apply form along with the request for proposal (RFP) and/or grant guidelines to the grant coordinator (Melissa Whitesell) following the timeline below. 

Six weeks before deadline

  • Notify dean or direct supervisor and grant coordinator of intent to apply by completing NOIA form. 
  • Grant coordinator forwards to business office and verifies eligibility.
  • Upon approval, begin drafting proposal.

Three weeks before deadline

  • PI submits final draft to grant coordinator for review and submission instructions.

Transformation Grants

Transformation Grants

Transformation Grants support individual instructors, teams of instructors, and entire departments, along with supporting professional staff, in replacing existing commercial textbooks and materials in a specific course with no- or low-cost student learning materials.

  • Adoption, adaptation, and/or creation of open educational resources, such as open textbooks and ancillary materials.
  • Adoption of library materials available in GALILEO and USG libraries at no additional cost to students.
  • Adoption of no-cost materials outside of OER, such as freely available websites and multimedia.
  • Adoption of low-cost materials, not exceeding $40.00 total per student.

Examples of Transformation Grants projects include:

  • Adopting an OpenStax Sociology textbook in place of a commercial textbook for Introduction to Sociology and creating new ancillary materials to support the adoption.
  • Adapting existing Calculus OER to fit the learning outcomes of your particular course and then adopting these new materials in place of a commercial textbook.
  • Creating new OER to adopt in place of a commercial textbook when there are no OER to cover the subject.
  • Creating a Library Reading List to adopt in place of a commercial textbook when there are no OER to cover the subject.
  • Adopting a low-cost homework or adaptive solution such as Lumen Learning’s Waymaker or OHMOpenStax Partner courseware, or other low cost materials to ensure total required resource costs for students are under $40.00.

Continuous Improvement Grants

Continuous Improvement Grants

Continuous Improvement Grants support projects that increase the sustainability of open educational resources through substantial revisions and the creation of new materials.

  • Revision of OER used in existing courses
  • Creation of ancillaries for existing OER courses
  • Replacement of current OER in courses with new/improved OER
