"In developmental psychology, attachment refers to the relationship between a baby or child and a caregiver to whom the child turns for love and protection, especially when fear or anxiety is experienced...When attachments are secure, future relationships are likely to be fulfilling and rewarding, but attachment insecurity gives rise to relationships that are prone to anxiety, jealousy and discontent" (Encyclopedic Dictionary of Psychology).
