Professor Johnson is a born and raised Texan and has lived there her whole life until moving to Georgia. She's been fascinated by criminals since a young age by watching Unsolved Mysteries with her mom. She decided to double major in Criminal Justice and Sociology at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX and earned her Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice within four years of graduating high school. Professor Johnson decided she wanted to delve deeper into understanding human behavior and was accepted into the master's program in sociology at the University of North Texas in Denton, TX. While in this program, she also specialized in criminology and homicide. She graduated with her Master of Science in sociology in just a year and a half. By this time, Professor Johnson knew she wanted to teach and conduct research, so she applied and was accepted into UNT's Sociology PhD program and specialized in family violence, criminological theory, and homicide.
