Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg 

Date: Thursday, June 25

Time: 11:30am-12:30pm

Location: Library Room 235

Join us as Dr. Jane Taylor leads a discussion about this book written by Southern author, Fannie Flagg.   Evelyn visits a nursing home and meets Mrs. Threadgood who shares a tale of two friends--the tomboy Idgie and her friend Ruth--who back in the thirties ran a restaurant in Whistle Stop, Alabama where one could find good food, friendship and an occasional murder.

Join us as Dr. Kelley Mahoney leads a book talk about the short story, Babette's Feast, in which two devout, elderly sisters allow their cook, a French refugee, to prepare a feast, despite their concerns over the decadence of French cuisine.

Bringing Abundance Back by Barbara Tucker

Date:  July 15

Barbara Tucker will read, discuss, and autograph her latest novel, Bringing Abundance Back.  The main character, Virginia Foster is a middle-aged empty nester in Abundance, a small city in upstate South Carolina which got its name from the Abundance Mills Flour Company. She and her husband are affluent members of the town, but she is concerned about the future of the community and spearheads a biscuit festival to bring attention and jobs back to Abundance. As she and her team of fellow retirees work to build a successful festival they face opposition from within and without.

Considered by many critics to be Carver's finest work, "Cathedral" is a short story about an evening spent by a married couple and the wife's blind friend.  Dr. Jennifer Randall will lead a discussion providing insight into the complexities of the relationships and meaning found within the story.
