Mission and Goals
The mission of the Library Instruction Program is to promote Information Literacy by teaching students to use Library resources and services effectively.
Help students develop the critical thinking skills necessary to retrieve and evaluate information resources.
Help students utilize various resources of information and identify when and how to ask for assistance.
Complement other classroom learning and enable students to identify information resources pertinent to their course work and research.
Teach concepts and processes of information retrieval.
Prepare students for effective life-long use of library and information resources.
Planning a visit
Instruction should be requested at least 7 days in advance. Give at least one alternative date/time in case the course instructor’s first preference is unavailable. Click on the Library Instruction Request Form tab to fill out our online request form.
Library instruction sessions are held in the wireless classroom of the Library (Room 113). The library classroom seats 30 students. If your class has more than 30 students registered, it may be necessary for a librarian to visit your classroom for the instructional session.
Let us know if any students have special needs so we may make appropriate accommodations.
The librarian assigned to meet with the class will issue a confirmation. Please confer with the librarian who is scheduled to provide instruction and discuss your assignment, potential topics, and library resources.
- The librarian will provide you with copies of handouts distributed at the library instruction session to convey the contents of the session to absent students.
Library Instruction Options
Levels of instruction consist of:
Basic research skills instruction
Special topics workshops
While most library instruction is conducted in a one-time, 50-minute session, librarians are available to meet with your class over multiple sessions.
Additionally, librarians will work with faculty to develop research guides as well as other types of instructional materials for inclusion in D2L and online/hybrid courses.
