Children's Literature: Award Winners

Newbery Award

                               

The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's book published the previous year. On June 22, 1921, Frederic G. Melcher proposed the award to the American Library Association meeting of the Children's Librarians' Section and suggested that it be named for the eighteenth-century English bookseller John Newbery.  For a complete list of the Newbery Medal and Honor books from 1922 to the present day, you may visit the ALA website.

Caldecott

                      

Frederic G. Melcher suggested in 1937 the establishment of a medal to be given to the artist who had created the most distinguished picture book of the year and named in honor of the nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph J. Coretta Scott King Award

                                 

The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values.  The award honors Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood.  For a complete list of Coretta Scott King award winners from 1970 to the present day, you may visit the ALA website.
